Chateau in the Loire
Azay-le-Rideau This Chateau was originally built in the early 1500's.
Inside We took a self guided tour of the inside of Azay. The interior was mostly un-furnished, but a few rooms, like the one pictured had antique
furniture. It was interesting to learn that hallways had not been "invented", and therefore people living in the chateau would have to walk through several different bedrooms before reaching their own. This is one of the reasons for the large 4-post beds. The curtains helped give the sleeping individual a bit of privacy.
Usse The Chateau Usse is said to have inspired Perrault to write his famous story "Sleeping Beauty". Mainly built in the 15th and 16th centuries on the foundation of an 11th century fortress. In 1885, the Count de Blacas
inherited the castle, and it has stayed the property and residence of his descendants to this day.
Villandry This chateau is most famous for its elaborate gardens. There are 4 main gardens - The Ornamental, Water, Herb, and Kitchen gardens. Over 250,000 flower and vegetable plans are raised and planted in the gardens each year.
